Suitcase Trolleys – Hardshell, Soft Luggage and Aluminium
A suitcase trolley is the indispensable travel companion – whether for a weekend trip, a business journey or a three-week holiday. With telescopic handle, 4 wheels and thoughtful interior fittings, it rolls smoothly through airports, train stations and hotels. At Markenkoffer.de you'll find trolleys in every size, material and price range – from €49.
What trolley sizes are available?
- Underseater (40 × 30 × 20 cm) – fits under the seat in front, free carry-on with budget airlines
- Cabin luggage (55 × 40 × 20 cm) – standard carry-on size for most airlines
- Medium (65-66 cm) – for 1-2 week trips, approx. 60-75 litres volume
- Large (75-78 cm) – for long trips or family travel, 90-110 litres
- XL (80+ cm) – for very long journeys or moving house, 120+ litres
Hardshell, soft luggage or aluminium?
Hardshell trolleys made of polycarbonate or ABS are robust, waterproof and protect sensitive contents – the most common choice for air travel. Soft luggage trolleys made of polyester or nylon are more flexible when packing and often feature outer pockets for quick access. Aluminium trolleys are extremely sturdy and long-lasting (10+ years is not unusual), but heavier and pricier than polycarbonate.
What to look for when buying a trolley?
- Number of wheels – 4 spinner wheels are more manoeuvrable, 2 wheels are sturdier on rough surfaces
- Expansion feature – an expansion zip gives 3-5 cm extra volume for the return trip with souvenirs
- TSA lock – built-in combination lock, important for US travel, otherwise locks get broken open
- Empty weight – carry-on under 2.5 kg, M under 3.2 kg, L under 4 kg, XL under 5 kg is good
- Interior fittings – zip divider, elastic straps, padded compartment for a suit or laptop
Trolley for business trips, holidays or families
For business trips, models with a separate suit compartment, laptop straps and document pocket are recommended – usually cabin size or M. For holiday travel, a medium-sized trolley (65 cm) is the all-rounder, with an expansion feature also handy for the return trip with souvenirs. Families often opt for luggage sets or combine a large L suitcase with a cabin bag per person.
Trolley care and lifespan
With careful handling, branded trolleys last 5-10 years and more. Aluminium models gain character with patina, while polycarbonate should be protected from excessive sun exposure.

Frequently asked questions
What trolley size for 1 week?
For a week's holiday, a medium-sized trolley with 65-66 cm height and 60-75 litres volume is usually enough. If you pack compactly, a large carry-on (55 cm, 35-45 litres) can also suffice. For bulkier clothing or several pairs of shoes, it's better to go for the M size.
Hardshell or soft luggage?
Hardshell trolleys protect sensitive contents better and are waterproof – ideal for air travel and electronics. Soft luggage is more flexible when packing, has outer pockets for quick access and adapts to full overhead lockers. For family trips with mixed contents, a mix of both materials is often used.
Are 4 wheels better than 2 wheels?
4-wheel spinners are easier to manoeuvre at the airport and can be pushed alongside you. 2 wheels are sturdier on cobblestones and natural paths, and need less maintenance. For business trips, 4 wheels are common, while for backpacking-style travel, 2 wheels are more practical.
How much does a good suitcase trolley cost?
Entry-level trolleys start from €49, good mid-range models cost €80-150, premium trolleys from branded manufacturers €200-500, aluminium models €400-1,200. For occasional travel, mid-range is sufficient, while frequent travellers invest in premium for durability and comfort.
How heavy should a trolley be?
Carry-on trolleys under 2.5 kg are good, under 2 kg very light. Medium-sized models under 3.2 kg, large ones under 4 kg, XL under 5 kg. With strict airline limits, every kilo counts: 1 kg less empty weight means 1 kg more content or less excess baggage fee.
Is a TSA lock worth it?
Definitely for US travel – without a TSA lock, locks get broken open during security checks. Internationally too, a built-in combination lock is more convenient than a separate key. TSA locks have a master key for customs officers, which doesn't affect security in any way.
